Sivaramamangalam ELU UGANKONDA PERIA SASHTHA LORD SRI AYYANAR SWAMY



Generally Ayyanarswamy shrines are usually located at the peripheries or boundaries of rural villages, like vice this Sivaramamangalam ELU UGANKONDA PERIA SASHTHA LORD SRI AYYANAR SWAMY  temple also not an exceptional, located in the river bank of Thamiravaruni, which gives greenish visual feast to the viewer’s eyes by cultivating paddy, plantain, sugarcane & spices,until our views goes.


            The Nine vaishnava shrines popularly known as ‘NAVATHIRUPATHIKAL’  located in Srivaikundam, Alwalthirunagari,Thenthiruperai,Thirutholaivillimangalam etc. one of the siavasthalam this Ayyanar swamy temple located as in the centre of attraction of all above vaishnava shrines,
Sashtha Lord Ayyanar have the other names of Ayyan, Ayyanarappan.The main Idole of Ayyanar is in sitting position keeping left leg up on the pedam, when the right leg keeping down, beside this the 21 associate deities (Kaval deivangal) such as  Sudalaimadaswamy and  Devi Essakkiamman etc.  deities located within premises of temple surrounding the Main deity of Lord.Ayyanar swamy.



            The worship of this Ayyanar swamy  is a very ancient ancestral clan-based worship system known as ‘kulatheiva vazhipattumurai’. The  peoples from the communities such as SENGUNTHER MUDALIAR in which the majority of clans takes part in the worship from the Handloom weaving based villages i.e. KADALAIYUR, MADURAI,  ETTAYAPURAM, AYAN POMMAIYABURAM, THIRUNELVELI, ABIRAMAM, ERAL, ARUPPUKKOTTAI, & CHENNAI etc. and other community like PILLAIMAR, CHETTIARS,and also the MARAVAR community,

and believed that those who have their origins in the surrounding areas near about 200 years ago. And migrated to above villages owing the calamity of frequent river flooding because of the weakened river bund in the north bank. Present days the devotees of Ayyanar swamy spreaded globally, because of their profession /business.

 It is a fascinating traditional culture that different community peoples worshiping together will be the great example for communal integrity. The festivals of Ayyanar and other kaval deivangal is celebrated during summer season ‘Panguni uthiram day’ that is the date in which lord Ayyanar swamy born, by all the related clans from above different communities together as if they are from one family keeping aside their community origination. This all two days Annadhanam will be offered to the devotees by the different Annadhana committies,

  The worship pattern is associated with sacrificial offerings of pure vegetarian food such as chakkaraippongal, Poonparuppu. However animals such as chicken and goats are offered to few of the selected 21 associate deities (Kaval deivangal) such as Sudalaimadaswamy, goddess Devi Issakki Amman etc. deities located within Ayyanar temple for favors.









 In return the local priest might offer holy flowers or Veeputhi (holy ash) to the worshippers. Folk Tales like ‘Thappai melam’ and Folk arts like Villupattu are enacted to bring out the message of the Ayyanar folk story to one and all.
